Matcha
What does “single origin matcha” mean?
Single origin matcha means that all the tea leaves used come from one specific farm or region, rather than being blended from multiple farms or regions. This creates a pure, traceable flavor profile that reflects the terroir and craft of that farm.
What is a cultivar blend matcha?
A blend matcha combines several tea cultivars often from the same region to create a more layered, balanced, or bold flavor. Blending allows for more complexity and consistency in taste.
Crafted by a seasoned chashi 茶師 (tea master), our matcha blends combines multiple premium cultivars for a harmonious flavor profile. Each component is carefully selected to bring out layers of umami, floral freshness, and a smooth, full-bodied finish.
Which is better: single origin or blended matcha?
Neither is “better” ,it depends on your taste and how you use your matcha.
- Single origin is great for those who want a clean, distinctive flavor and enjoy their matcha plain (e.g., koicha, usucha).
- Blended matcha tends to be more balanced and forgiving, making it great for lattes or everyday rituals.
Are all your matchas ceremonial grade?
Yes, both our single origin and blended matchas are first-harvest, shade-grown ceremonial grade, suitable for traditional preparation or modern uses.
Can I taste the difference between cultivars?
Absolutely. Each cultivar has its own flavor notes, some are sweeter, more umami-rich, or more aromatic. Blends create harmony; single origins let one character shine.
Does matcha have an expiration date?
Matcha doesn’t have a strict expiration date, but its quality can decline over time. After opening, it’s recommended to consume matcha within 3-6 months to enjoy optimal health benefits, flavor, and aroma. When stored properly airtight, cool, and protected from light and moisture matcha can stay fresh for up to 1 year.
Why does the origin, cultivar and region shape your taste experience?
Just like wine or specialty coffee, the origin, cultivar, and region where matcha is grown directly influence its flavor, aroma, and quality.
- Origin & Region: Soil, climate, and farming methods shape the character of the matcha. For example, Uji matcha is prized for its smooth umami and vibrant green color due to its rich tea-growing heritage.
- Cultivar: A cultivar is the specific variety of tea plant. Each one has a unique flavor profil, some are naturally sweeter, others more floral, creamy, or bold. For instance, Okumidori is mellow and rich, while Samidori offers fresh, delicate notes.
Together, these factors determine the matcha’s final taste and quality which is why we highlight them, so you can choose a matcha that fits your taste and ritual.
Which milk is best for my matcha latte?
Whole milk: Creamy and rich, it complements matcha’s natural sweetness and gives a smooth texture.
Oat milk: Mild and creamy, it’s a popular plant-based choice that blends well without overpowering the matcha flavor.
Almond milk: Light and slightly nutty, great if you want a subtle flavor enhancement.
Soy milk: Creamy and protein-rich, it works well for a fuller body in your latte.
Coconut milk: Adds a tropical twist but has a stronger flavor that can sometimes compete with matcha.
If you want the classic creamy latte experience, whole milk or oat milk are usually the top picks.
How to keep matcha fresh?
Keep it fresh: Store your matcha tin airtight in a cool place (fridge is best). Use within 4–6 weeks after opening for the best flavor.
